Safety on the roadway is everyone’s responsibility. That is the premise behind Nevada’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP). The plan is driven by the goal of zero fatalities through reductions in lane departures, crashes at intersections, incidents of impaired driving, a decrease in pedestrian involved crashes, and increased seat belt use. It may be your family member, it may be your friend or co-worker – it may be YOU!

What Is the SHSP?

Nevada’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan, or SHSP, is a statewide, comprehensive safety plan that provides a coordinated framework for reducing fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads. The SHSP strategically establishes statewide goals and critical emphasis areas developed in consultation with Federal, state, local, and private sector safety stakeholders.

Nevada, under the leadership of the Nevada Department of Transportation, completed development of the SHSP in 2006. A broad range of state agencies and other organizations actively participated in the process through the Nevada Executive Committee on Traffic Safety (NECTS) and the Technical Working Group (TWG).

The process involved a careful review of the data that resulted in the identification of five key emphasis areas including the following:
